DigAlert (Underground Service Alert of Southern California or USA/SC) was formed on September 13th, 1976 in response to a tragic and deadly accident that occurred in Culver City 3 months prior. USA North 811 began operation in May of 1975 & incorporated as a 501 (c)(6) Non Profit Mutual Benefit Corporation in 1986. Our objective is to receive planned excavation reports from public or private excavators and to transmit those planned excavation reports to all participating utility members of USA North 811 who may have facilities in and around that excavation site. The Ohio Utilities Protection Service (O.U.P.S.) was founded in 1972 as a nonprofit collaboration of the Ohio Bell Telephone Company, East Ohio Gas Company and Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company. Charged with protecting Ohio’s underground infrastructure, the alliance provided notification to facility owners about planned excavation activities. Within its first year, O.U.P.S. processed 13,678 excavation requests. In the years to follow, the organization expanded membership and developed its departments. The incorporation of technology and modernization of everyday operations has solidified the organization’s position as a damage prevention industry leader.
